User Interface vs User Experience

When creating a website for your brand, the main concern is what is the best design approach to take for your page. Should you be focused on the use of it or in the overall design? The key is finding a balance; but in order for you to do that it is best to understand what the difference is between both.

Web design services offer designs that cater to different functions. There are two kinds of approach to designs that you should take note of: User Interface (UI) Design and User Experience (UX) Design. These work to make your website visually appealing and functional.

What is UI?

User Interface, or more commonly known as UI Design, is the type of design that focuses on what is usually referred to as the ‘graphic design’ of the website. The user interface designer is responsible for the look, feel, responsiveness, and interactivity of the platform which involve animation, branding and graphic development, design research, device screen adaptation, and user guides. It focuses on the visual representation of the brand, what relays the visual language of the product.

According to Emil Lamprecht of Career Foundry, if the product was the human body, UI is like the skin, senses, and makeup of a platform. A skin as it’s the graphic presentation; sense for how users interact with it; and makeup for what leads the users visually.

What is UX?

The usability, accessibility, and use of the platform falls under the User Experience Design, otherwise called UXD or UED. This focuses on strategy, content, wireframing, and prototyping. These tasks involve competitor and customer analysis, content development, product strategy, development planning, prototyping, testing, and wireframing.

With user experience, the design is curated to the user’s advantage. Web design services often create them based on what would make the platform easier to use and what enhancements can be applied to further make the experience better. It is a process of development and improvement.

Following Lamprecht’s analogy where the UI is the skin, senses, and makeup, UX is then the internal organs that are measured and optimized to make the body function. And as the analogy implies, a body can not function at its best with the other parts missing just as a design without both types of designs put in mind.

UI and UX design work hand in hand to create a better experience for users. A website that looks good but does not function well is just as bad as a functional website that is not visually appealing. You need both done smoothly to have a good product.
