With an aim of reaching 100 million US users a month, ABC News and Yahoo! News announced a “strategic online news alliance”. Under the agreement, news from ABC will dominate Yahoo News and Yahoo front page with original video series.
Furthermore, the two parties will co-produce coverage for major news events and will have integrated bureaus in New York, Washington DC and Los Angeles.
“Our deep collaboration with ABC News further strengthens Yahoo! as the No. 1 online news source, greatly enhancing our already robust news content”, Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo executive vice president of America wrote on a press release.
The agreement was announced on Good Morning America this Monday. Yahoo!, a leading online news source, will now be including TV show “Newsmakers” anchored by ABC journalists Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos, Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and Robin Roberts.
“Going forward, we will greatly expand this leadership by building a connection with a whole new online audience”, Ben Sherwood, president of ABC News, said on the release.
In a press conference in New York, Couric told the press that the alliance creates incredible opportunities to do expanded interviews and to dig a little deeper where “you have the luxury of time”.
It was also announced on GMA that George Stephanopoulos’ interview with President Barack Obama will be webcast live on Yahoo.com and ABCNews.com to the President.
Linda Holmes of npr.org discusses that “ordinary site users likely won’t care about the behind-the-scenes changes to how things are financed and branded, and there isn’t an obvious celebrity angle, the way there was when Arianna Huffington essentially took over managing content at AOL”. According to Holmes, Yahoo! has certainly had its share of negative press and some fresh content is likely welcome.
Moreover, the agreement states that ABC and Yahoo will work together to sell advertising. “ABC will handle selling online ads during the “upfront” season, when advertisers bid on commercial time for the upcoming TV season, reported on physorg.com. Yahoo will take care of sales during the rest of the year”.
For future news operation, Levinsohn said Yahoo users will notice an increase in coverage of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections. ABC News will still maintain editorial control over ABCNews.com and GoodMorningAmerica.com while Yahoo! News will still maintain editorial control of all its sites.
Recently, Yahoo has integrated ABC News for the British Royal Wedding and 9/11 10th Anniversary news coverage. The two parties also had an earlier news-sharing deal.
