As part of the technology transfer campaign for Filipino deaf learners, the project manager of New Media Services CARES traveled all the way from the Philippines to South Korea to learn from deaf basketball players from Australia’s Victorian College for the Deaf (VCD).
Yvonne Celeste, a Filipino teacher spearheading the campaign, also discussed new teaching strategies and deaf-oriented programs with Ramas Rentelis. Rentelis, a Lithuanian national who teaches at VCD in Melbourne, is with the team in SoKor for a sports tournament.
During the discussion, Rentelis pointed out the use of iPad, iPhone, Skype, FaceTime and other modern technology products in communicating with deaf children.
However, Celeste made it clear that such products are not yet commonly used by deaf students in the Philippines due to lack of resources.
Celeste is crafting a program that would introduce new learning experiences to deaf individuals in the Cordillera region, with Baguio City Special Education (SPED) Center as the pioneer school.
The program also aims to come up with effective deaf-friendly classroom communication methods, practices in families with deaf members, faculty and student exchange programs, sign language standards, and the potential collaboration between hearing and non-hearing individuals in the Philippines.
“There are successful programs in other countries that we can implement here in the Philippines to give chances to our deaf children to be fine artists, pilots, teachers, doctors or whatever they want to be,” wrote Celeste in her report.
She revealed that she has already furnished a letter to the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional offices about the milestone project while inquiring on current government programs for the Deaf.
